WHAT IS A GENRE?
A Genre in Photography is represented by a style, technique and content that typifies that genre. For example studio photography as a genre is normally typified by indoor studio photo shoots of people or objects, where the lighting can be controlled and maintained along with costumes, props and backdrops. One photograph could come under a number of genres for example a portrait by Richard Avedon could also go under Documentary or Fashion depending on the emphasis in the content and output intent of the photographer. Genres help spectators, critics and gallery curators to classify photography and supports the comparison of similar types of photos through the decades. Professional photographers tend to specialize in one particular category throughout their life.
