ALTERNATIVE TECHNIQUES
Over the past 160 years photographers have experimented with ways of capturing images onto different surfaces. Below are a number of the most important techniques that have been developed over time.
Step 1: Read the instructions. Step 2: Watch the videos or teacher demonstrations. Step 3: Read the safety guidelines for that technique. Step 4: Use your photos to create these alternative images. Step 5: Review the outcomes and improve the work. Step 6: Upload the results to your website and write up your findings on your Learning Blog. |
PINHOLEA pinhole camera, is a simple camera without a lens and with a single small aperture, a pinhole– effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side. Light from a scene passes through this single point and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the box. Exposures can typically range from five seconds up to as much as several hours.
CYANOTYPESCyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings, referred to as blueprints.

PHOTOGRAMSA photogram is a photographic image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of a light-sensitive material such as photographic paper and then exposing it to light. The paper is then processed in chemicals to reveal the silhouettes of the objects.
MANUAL TECHNIQUESHave a look at the wide range of manual techniques that can be applied to photographs. Have a go at applying some of these techniques to your own photographs to help show your experimentation.
